EMT jobs take a fair amount of training a ton of experience. In order to begin you must be 18 years or older, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and have a valid driver's license. If these things are in order then you can apply for certification programs for EMT jobs. These can be state approved EMT courses, some of which are online, or programs offered through colleges and universities. To get ahead, get as much hands on experience as you can. At the end of the program there are exams which, if passed, will certify you as an EMT.

While EMT jobs can be stressful, they are great preparation for the extreme conditions of a firefighter career. EMTs are expected to perform well in difficult situations such as; driving an ambulance in dangerous traffic conditions, determining safeness of scene, clearing areas of hazards, directing traffic, prioritize patients according to needed care, and of course performing basic emergency medical care.

Being able to handle these tasks will help to get you ready for a career in firefighting. It is not just about fires but all that goes with it. In many circumstances, first aid, CPR, or other medical treatments may be needed on the scene.

EMT jobs require a lot of the same things that firefighter careers do, therefore, if you are certified as an emergency medical technician you are more likely to be hired over those applicants who are not. Some fire departments, however, do offer their own training in these areas so check with your local department to see what they expect.
