Why some blogs never make money
Despite what many get rich quick ebooks may say it's not easy making a living blogging, or from any type of website. The truth is that many webmasters struggle to even pay their hosting bills from advertising or sales, so why do so many blogs struggle to make money?Un-targeted traffic. This is a major problem as I see so many blogs shooting for general traffic in the hope that just in terms of volume some of it will make money. The truth is that advertisers are only really interested in targeted traffic as it's the only type that converts into sales.
Even when you do have visitors who are looking for a specific subject that doesn't mean you've hit the jackpot. In order for visitors to be valuable there has to be a purchase associated in some way with your content, e.g. a site on site on funny pictures may be specific but no-one visiting is going to have a buying mentality.
It's important to create content that sells, and this goes for blogs as well as ecommerce sites. E.g. if your promoting an affiliate product in a post you really have to drive home why it's so good and why you endorse it in order for people to "believe". You can't just drop a link at the end and hope people click it out of curiosity.
The design of your site can also negatively affect your sales. That new flashy menu you had created may look cool but if it makes it too difficult to navigate your site then you'll be losing customers. People on the net have very little patience so you need to make your site as easy to use as possible.
Implementing the wrong type of advertising is another common mistake. I can't remember the last time I bought something from a pop-up window so why do webmasters insist on using this type of intrusive advertising? Any ads need to complement and match your content in order to be effective.
It's not easy converting blog readers into money as I hope I have shown, but at the same time it is possible if you use a little common sense and also plenty of testing to see what works.
